AFTER THE MARRIAGE / PRACTICAL GUIDE

After the wedding
official transactions

You are married. Which records now need changing? ID cards, addresses and travel documents may all need attention at once, but not everyone needs to renew everything. Start by identifying what changed: your surname, your home, or both?

This guide is a general roadmap for adult Turkish citizens living in Türkiye. For circumstances such as marriage abroad or individual surname requests, speak separately to the relevant civil registry office or Turkish consular mission.

1. Check that the marriage is recorded in the civil registry

For a marriage performed before an authorised official in Türkiye, the marriage authority handles notification to the civil registry. Not seeing a change on screen the same day does not by itself mean something is wrong. If necessary, through the civil registration extract service, check your details; if anything is missing or incorrect, contact the authority that performed the marriage and the civil registry office.

Before booking further appointments, know what your record says. Keep your family marriage booklet safe; rather than sending every institution a photograph of the whole document, ask which document is needed and how to submit it securely.

2. Identity renewal and surname information after marriage

If the information on your ID card has changed, clarify the reason for renewal and your registered surname. If there is a special request or a dispute in the registration regarding your surname preference, find out the appropriate method for your situation from the civil registry office instead of choosing a single petition sample from the internet.

For a standard application, have these ready (the photo must be taken within the last six months): a valid photo ID, a biometric photo and payment of the card fee are key requirements. Check the full list before your appointment.

Booking through e-Devlet does not complete the application

Do not think of an adult ID card renewal as something completed by uploading documents alone. You can book an appointment, but you must apply in person. Check the delivery address when applying, then check the details on the card when it arrives.

3. Treat address notification as a separate step if you have moved

Notification of change of address must be made within 20 business days from the move. Do not read this period as "20 days for all transactions after the marriage". If you continued to live in the same house, your situation is not the same as a couple who moves out weeks after the wedding.

If you meet the conditions, you can notify an address change through e-Devlet. Moving into a vacant home and joining someone at an already registered address are different procedures; the latter may require a consent process. If the system refers you to the civil registry office, do not treat the process as complete.

Check the result screen. Opening an electricity subscription, giving a new address to the bank and your address registration in the civil registry are separate issues; Doing one does not replace the others.

4. If the surname has changed, update the information on the driver's license as well

NVI states that the driver's license must be renewed when personal information such as name or surname changes. This application is separate from the ID card. Check your current document, ID, driver health report, a biometric photo taken in the last six months and relevant payment items from the current list.

Do not prepare according to general advice such as “two photos are definitely required” or “it would be cheaper with ID”. Choose the transaction type correctly; do not confuse the initial driver's license application with the renewal due to the change of identity information.

5. Check passport, visa and ticket in the same file

If your identity information has changed after the passport was obtained, the passport must be renewed according to NVI. If you are going abroad soon, do not leave it until the last week. There are different stages between receiving the application and receiving the document.

Compare the first and last name on the reservation with the document you will use for travel. If there is a difference in information, find out the change procedure from the airline or the channel where you purchased the ticket; just don't assume that carrying a marriage certificate will be enough everywhere.

Is the visa in the old passport automatically considered valid?

NVI explains that it returns the pages of the old passport containing visa or residence permit without canceling them. This does not mean that all countries will accept the old visa the same as your new information. Ask the relevant country's official authority and the carrier about travel conditions with old and new passports.

When planning a honeymoon, clarify the document calendar before booking. Honeymoon routes guide for trip lengths and holiday styles; check entry requirements separately through official channels.

6. Review business, banking and insurance records

A change in your civil registration record may not appear in every service at the same time. Instead of simply waiting for the new card, note which details need updating at each institution. This list is a preparation aid; required documents and methods differ between institutions.

Workplace and human resources

Contact human resources about your personnel file, the name on your payslip, contact address and any employer benefits. If asking about marriage leave or an internal benefit, explain your employment status and contract too; do not assume the same entitlement and conditions apply to everyone.

Bank and insurance company

Check the information on the account, card, correspondence address and policies. Find out from your bank which channel will be updated and whether the card needs to be renewed. Do not assume that the old policy automatically covers your spouse; Talk to your insurer about coverage.

Use two separate checklists rather than leaving all these checks to one spouse. An address change may affect both of you, while a surname change on a particular document may apply to only one.

7. Distinguish between family doctor and health insurance

If your new home is in another area, check where your registered GP is located. If you want changes, check the current conditions in the relevant service of the Ministry of Health. Completing the address update is not confirmation that you have switched to your preferred physician.

Health insurance is a separate record. Do not assume automatic consequences for spousal benefits, your own insurance, or changing employment status. In the SPAS healthcare eligibility service, check your record and discuss any missing information with SGK. You do not need to send a medical report or ID document through this website.

8. Remember utilities at your new home and services at your old address

Check contracts at the new address for water, electricity, natural gas and internet. Don't just open new connections; also check if there are any remaining services in the old house. Find out the transfer, termination, security deposit and installation conditions from each provider individually.

Telephone, shopping applications, shipping addresses and regular shipments are also the practical side of this list. A new card going to the wrong address or a personal document being delivered to someone else can be caused by a forgotten profile address.

Small but useful distinction: Declaring your official residence is one thing, changing a store's delivery address is another. Check them both out on their own screen.

Fee, appointment and duration: do not rely on a single list

Fees for ID, driver's license and passport are different. Just because you find an appointment for the same date does not mean that they will be made with a single payment or joint discount. When making payment, check the transaction type, applicant and current tariff on the official screen.

For this reason, we do not give the amount of an old year as if it were current. NVI's through the official appointment website check the fee information for the relevant procedure. For special circumstances, ask ALO 199. A fixed delivery time of 'three days' or 'one week' cannot be promised for everyone either.

How does the priority change in two different situations?

  • You moved into a new house, no travel: Handle the address notification in due time. Sort document and agency updates according to changing information.
  • International travel is imminent: Check your registration, passport, visa (if applicable) and ticket together immediately. Finding an appointment or receiving an application is not a guarantee of catching your flight.

Frequently asked questions about official procedures after marriage

Does everyone have to replace their ID card after marriage?

First look at what information has changed on your registration and card. Instead of applying the same document list for every marriage, clarify the changed information and the reason for the transaction with the civil registry office.

Can an ID card renewal be completed entirely through e-Devlet?

For adults, booking an appointment does not complete an ID card application. NVİ requires applicants over 15 to apply in person; do not confuse the online service for children with adult renewal.

Does the 20 business days for address change start from the marriage?

Address notification period is related to moving. The date of your wedding and the date you start living in your new house may be different.

Will our address automatically be the same when we get married?

Marriage and residence notification are separate transactions. Check the address where you actually live; do not assume that your spouse's address is automatically assigned to you.

Is the passport renewed when the surname is changed?

NVI states that if the identity information changes after the passport is obtained, it must be renewed. Check your passport and reservation information together before travelling.

Can I travel with my visa in my old passport?

One answer does not fit all countries. Confirm the acceptance of the new and old passport together, the surname change, if any, and the additional document requirement from the official authority of the country issuing the visa and the carrier.

Is there a single payment for ID, driver's license and passport?

These are separate application types. Check the fees for each procedure in the official tariff; booking appointments for the same day does not automatically give you a discount.

Will my family doctor change when I get married?

Check which family doctor you are registered with. If you want one nearer your new home, review the conditions in the Ministry of Health's service for changing your family doctor.

Will I automatically benefit from my spouse's health insurance?

Do not draw conclusions simply because you got married. Check your healthcare eligibility record and clarify questions about your insurance status with SGK.

How long does it take for new documents to arrive?

There is no guaranteed delivery date that applies to every application. Track your application; do not base imminent travel plans on an estimated delivery date.

You don't have to finish everything on the same day.

The important thing is not to confuse a timed notification with a casual profile change. Keep it visible for both of you which step is completed and which is waiting; Complete the rest in order with the current guidance of the institutions.
